Moving from Hibernate to Space

Author XAP Version Last Updated Reference Download
Shay Hassidim 8.0 Feb 2011

Overview

The following example is based on the standard Spring Hibernate Integration tutorial. In this pattern you will see how to modify an existing simple spring/hibernate application to leverage GigaSpaces as the in-memory Data-grid and the application server hosting both the web application and the data in-memory. The Hibernate persistency settings will still be leveraged by GigaSpaces Hibernate External Data Source storing the data in-memory into a database in an asynchronous manner.

Moving Spring/Hibernate application to GigaSpaces involves the following basic steps:

  1. Spring bean Configuration file changes
  2. POJO Class changes
  3. DAO implementation changes
  4. Deploying the data-grid and the Spring based web application into GigaSpaces

Architecture Change

The procedure described below will move a standard Spring/Hibernate application that is using the following architecture: Hibernate with EhCache.jpg

To use the following architecture where the Data-Grid placed in-line between the application and the database: Hibernate_DataGrid_mirror.jpg

Spring bean Configuration File

The existing application Spring bean Configuration file will be modified to:

  • Remove the usage of database at the application layer.
  • Use the GigaSpaces DAO implementation instead of the original Hibernate DAO implementation.
  • Use Data Grid (space) as the data access layer instead of the database.
  • Add a Spring Configuration file for the Data-Grid (Data-Grid PU).
  • Add a Spring Configuration file for the Mirror (Mirror PU).

UserDAO interface

The UserDAO interface remains as is:

package com.vaannila.dao;

import java.util.List;
import com.vaannila.domain.User;

public interface UserDAO {
    public void saveUser(User user) ;
    public List<User> listUser() ;
}

The DAO Implementation

The DAO implementation should be modified to use the GigaSpace interface to access the data grid instead of using the HibernateTemplate that is accessing the database. The GigaSpace interface similar methods to the HibernateTemplate to write and Query for objects.

package com.vaannila.dao;

import java.util.List;
import org.hibernate.SessionFactory;
import org.springframework.orm.hibernate3.HibernateTemplate;
import com.vaannila.domain.User;

public class UserDAOImpl implements UserDAO {

    private HibernateTemplate hibernateTemplate;

    public void setSessionFactory(SessionFactory sessionFactory) {
        this.hibernateTemplate = new HibernateTemplate(sessionFactory);
    }

    @Override
    public void saveUser(User user) {hibernateTemplate.saveOrUpdate(user);  }

    @Override
    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    public List<User> listUser() {  return hibernateTemplate.find("from User"); }
}
package com.vaannila.dao;

import java.util.ArrayList;
import java.util.List;
import org.openspaces.core.GigaSpace;
import com.vaannila.domain.User;

public class UserDAOSpaceImpl implements UserDAO {

    private GigaSpace gigaspace;

    @Override
    public void saveUser(User user) {
        gigaspace.write(user);
    }

    @Override
    @SuppressWarnings("unchecked")
    public List<User> listUser() {
        List<User> users = new ArrayList<User>();
        User usersArry[] = gigaspace.readMultiple(new User(), Integer.MAX_VALUE);
        for (User user : usersArry) {
            users.add(user);
        }
        return users;
    }

    public GigaSpace getGigaspace() {return gigaspace;}
    public void setGigaspace(GigaSpace gigaspace) {this.gigaspace = gigaspace;}
}

Deploying the Data-Grid and the Application

To deploy the Data-Grid and the web Application into the GigaSpaces runtime environment perform the following:

\gigaspaces-xap\bin\gs-agent.bat

On linux run the following command:

\gigaspaces-xap\bin\gs-agent.sh
  • Start the HSQLDB database:
java -cp ../lib/platform/jdbc/hsqldb.jar org.hsqldb.Server -database.0 file:mydb -dbname.0 xdb

Once the agent is up and running call the deploy commands.

  • Deploy the Data-grid using:
gs.sh deploy myDataGrid.jar

You should see the following:

Found 1 GSMs

  • To view the deployed application and data-grid start the GS-UI: On windows run the following command:
\gigaspaces-xap\bin\gs-ui.bat

On linux run the following command:

\gigaspaces-xap\bin\gs-ui.sh
  • Once the Data-Grid, Mirror and the application will be deployed you should see the following within the GS-UI:

hib2space1.jpg

  • You can start the web application and register users:

hib2space3.jpg

Each registered user data will be stored within the space and also be persist into the database.

  • To view the data within the space click the Data Types , select the User class and click Query:

hib2space2.jpg

This will display the Query view with the User objects data stored within the space:

hib2space5.jpg

  • To view the data within the database, start the database UI :
java -cp  ../lib/platform/jdbc/hsqldb.jar  org.hsqldb.util.DatabaseManager

And query the database:
